Welcome to 64 Shell Road in Mill Valley, a stunning residence designed by renowned architect Jonathan Feldman and completed in 2015. This custom-built home featured in Dwell Magazine embodies a warm, modern and timeless Northern Californian vernacular. The house is Constructed of organic materials including clear rough-sawn Western Red Cedar siding and a corrugated metal roof on the exterior and a combination of vertical-grain Douglas Fir, clear Western Red Cedar, steel, concrete and plaster on the interior, surrounding you in natural materials which blur the elements from outdoors to the interior.

The home is sited on a level, private, sun-filled lot. Enter through the automatic steel gate and you are immediately captured by the striking yet understated design. The natural siding of the house is designed to treat the patina over time creating a timeless style.
Open the custom Douglas fir front door and you are greeted by a double-height entry that is flooded with natural light. The main living area is open in concept. The kitchen flows to the dining and living room - and this entire space is flanked with two floor-to-ceiling, operable panels of glass that take you to the outdoors. Concrete floors on this level provide a natural foundation but are also functional as they provide radiant heat throughout.

The expansive kitchen cabinetry is all made of black walnut. The striking center island features soapstone countertops and seats several people comfortably. A custom steel hood with powerful yet quiet ventilation sits above a chef’s-quality range and there is a gorgeous decorative Fireclay Tile backsplash. The powder bathroom on this level boasts a feature wall of Talavera handmade Mexican tile.

A library that opens to the garden features custom cabinetry and shelving. The media room, which can be closed off for privacy, offers surround sound for movie night, and there is a built-in homework desk against a massive panel of glass looking out to the garden.

Upstairs you will notice the flooring transitions to incredible end-grain Douglas Fir. A steel and wood bridge connects two distinct areas.bedroom zones The primary suite offers western red cedar vaulted ceilings, a black walnut, custom walk- in closet and views of Horse Hill. The primary bathroom features a black walnut vanity, a Fireclay Tile shower, a sun-filled skylight and separate WC.
Across the bridge, also on this level, there is a casual, vaulted sitting room that bridges the primary suite to the additional bedrooms. Both bedrooms feature vaulted ceilings with sleeping lofts and custom built-ins for storage. A shared guest bath and separate laundry room complete this level.
Behind the home, in the garden, the casita is a mini-version of the main house with matching finishes throughout: cedar and fir wood details, concrete radiant heated floors and plaster treatment on the wall surfaces. The living room features windows looking out to the garden and is flanked by an eat-in kitchenette, a full bath and a bedroom with a sleeping loft accessed by French doors.
The level property is surrounded by a mature landscape designed by Robert Trachtenberg including a hedge that surrounds, offering privacy. A large lawn, three large raised veggie beds, fully planted and mature trees - a combination of Japanese maple, October glory maple, river birch, redwood, red oak, locust, redbud, lemon, plum, citrus and apple. Of course the entire property is on a multi-zone automatic irrigation system.

A traditional/infrared cedar sauna (accessed at the back of the casita) and a trampoline that has been thoughtfully concealed by a wrap-around hedge complete the picture. There is a detached two-car garage which offers ample storage and a high-speed EV Charger.
